130T Handling of nuclear waste capsules

Objective

Radioactive waste comes from nuclear power plants, hospitals, research institutes, and other industries. All waste must be taken care of with a view to long-term safety and security.

Operation

The spent nuclear waste will be placed in 5 m long capsules made of cast iron with an outer copper covering to protect against corrosion. In the encapsulating laboratory, techniques are developed for welding the lid onto the copper capsule and for checking the integrity of the welded joints.

Result

The capsules are placed onto specially built supports for being transported between the stations. Air film technology provides precise positioning of the capsule, which is important when welding the lid and X-raying the welded joint.
