Towards a more sustainable future

Sustainability as our business core value

For us, sustainability means thriving in business while minimizing negative impacts on the environment, community, and society at large.

In accordance with our strategy, our business is sustainable from economic, technical, social and environmental perspectives.
We understand that participation is the key to success.

  • Our solutions are designed to be economically, technically and environmentally competitive and profitable.
  • From our perspective, sustainability ensures our organization’s existence, and from the customer’s perspective, it ensures that the market demand for our products is met.
  • Our products are designed and manufactured to operate in harsh industrial environments and are upgradable to extend their lifespan.
  • Our products are customized; only the necessary components are purchased – no more and no less. This makes economic, technical and environmental sense for our customers.
  • Our business is also based on social sustainability: our employees are the heart of our company, and we want to retain each employee for as long as possible. We therefore ensure that our employees are involved in our operations and that we take care of their well-being, working conditions, health and safety. For our customers’ employees, our automated solutions contribute to increased safety, good ergonomics and less monotonous tasks.

Our commitment

We at Solving recognize the responsibility of our operations to have a direct and indirect impact on people and the planet within our sphere of influence.

We are committed to taking the necessary actions to ensure a sustainable future for our employees, partners, supply chain, customers, local communities and our stakeholders.

We are committed to conducting responsible business in compliance with national and international laws on human rights, anti-bribery, anti-corruption, antitrust, fair competition, environmental protection, as well as national health and safety regulations and applicable recognized international safety standards.

Where are we now

People – Social sustainability

  • We put safety at work first and promote a healthy physical and mental working environment.
  • We provide an equal and safe place to work.
  • Solving Management System is ISO 45001 certified emphasizing our proactive focus on work-related injury and illness prevention.
  • We maintain our safety culture through up-to-date guidelines and safety induction programs.
  • We maintain preventive occupational health care and promote health-enhancing recreational activities.

Governance (OHS)

Our key performance indicators for Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) include maintaining processes for conducting work environment risk assessments, safety rounds, equality mapping, and employee satisfaction surveys.

We are also committed to keeping safety plans up to date and ensuring personnel are well-trained in lifesaving and rescue procedures. These efforts are carried out in collaboration with the Occupational Safety Committee, which includes representatives from all employee groups.

Additionally, we record and report annual employee leave, sickness absences, temporary leave, and parental leave for caring for a sick child, in accordance with labor legislation. We also document and monitor Occupational Health and Safety (OHS)-related findings, including safety observations, near-miss incidents, workplace accidents, as well as positive feedback, anonymous input, and whistleblowing reports.

Local community

In our business we prioritize local subcontractors, suppliers and partners who are qualified, experienced and committed to continuously improving our products to be more sustainable and environmentally friendly. By favoring local businesses and labor, we reduce transport and its environmental impact and can actively support the development of local industry and economies.

During the holiday season, both the company and our employees contribute to charitable causes—such as providing Christmas gifts for underprivileged or seriously ill children. We also prioritize local service providers when organizing employee recreation days and when arranging networking activities with customers and suppliers.

Each year, we support local sports and cultural initiatives for children and young people, guided by the wishes of our employees. We are proud to be one of the primary sponsors of the football club FF Jaro.

Planet – Environmental sustainability

Our production and assembly processes don’t require excessive consumption of resources such as fresh water, hazardous chemicals or electricity.

Our processes don’t generate excessive amounts of hazardous waste, wastewater, chemicals or air and noise emissions.

Our waste management system is based on 5S – Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize, Sustain – to identify, classify and reduce the materials used in our operations. Our recycling system complies with local community regulations for the sorting of metal, glass, paper, biodegradable, combustible, electronic and wood materials, as well as materials destined for landfill or hazardous material handling (such as batteries, adhesives, lubricants). We communicate our environmental and sustainability policy to our employees, partners, supply chain, customers, local communities, and other stakeholders.

Carbon accounting

Effective from 2021, our carbon accounting reporting system tracks our CO2 emissions and is based on the Greenhouse Gas Protocol.

Scope 1 covers the essential direct emissions generated when heating our facilities in Jakobstad as well as emissions from company-owned vans.

Scope 2 covers the essential indirect emissions from the generation of purchased electricity consumed by our company.

These calculations contribute to the carbon footprint evaluation, which is certified and verified by the Finnish Chamber of Commerce.

Scope 3 includes all other significant indirect emissions throughout a company’s value chain that fall outside the boundaries of Scope 1 and 2. Within Solving’s operations, key contributors to Scope 3 emissions include business travel—particularly air travel—and transport-related activities. These emissions are calculated using the independent baseline methodology provided and verified by the Finnish Chamber of Commerce.

Governance

Our key performance indicators for environmental sustainability include monitoring the total tCO₂ emissions generated from operations (Scope 1 and 2), as well as evaluating and minimizing these emissions relative to company turnover.

In preparation for ISO 14001 certification in 2026, we are aligning our organization and processes accordingly. For 2025, our primary focus areas include enhancing chemical and waste management practices and advancing sustainability through the following projects:

  • SuFiRe (Sustainable Finnish Re-Manufacturing Industry) – consortium project together with Abo Akademi University, Amada Automation Europe Ltd, Mirka and Nordic Lights and partly funded by Business Finland, duration: 1.4.2025 – 31.3.2027
    • SuFiRe is a multidisciplinary research project where three research groups join to understand how the green transition can be furthered in businesses and what business opportunities the transition presents.
    • SuFiRe focuses on the Finnish manufacturing industry, The larger project goal is divided into three objectives:  To identify what aspects of Ecodesign regulation (ESPR) are most critical for businesses and how they can adapt to them, to study new business opportunities that emerge from the new environmental regulations, to develop ways to motivate employees to increase their consideration of sustainability in their daily practices.

Profit – Economic sustainability

Economic sustainability ensures that our material handling solutions are competitive and profitable, enabling us to remain a stable employer in our local community.

We offer complete tailor-made solutions based on standardized products and modules, as well as proven solutions. This is an environmentally sustainable way for us to produce and source materials for direct use in customer projects while avoiding excessive inventory and the risk of obsolete materials.

Our products are built to last, and we also offer upgrades and retrofits of customized heavy-load material handling concepts to extend equipment life and to reduce the use of virgin materials.

Governance

We measure economic sustainability through key performance indicators that reflect our commitment to long-term value creation. We ensure financial stability by maintaining healthy profitability, strong cash flow, and responsible debt levels. To build long-term resilience, we invest in innovation, diversify our revenue streams, and continuously improve cost efficiency. We create societal value by supporting local economies, generating employment, and contributing through taxes. Finally, we prioritize transparency by reporting clearly and aligning with ESG standards to ensure accountability and trust.
